"Unfortunately, one of the main reasons for the shortage of PS5 consoles is due to scalpers. These opportunistic people have been using bots to scan retailers for PS5 stock when it becomes available and buy as many of the consoles as they can in one go. [...] While this isn’t illegal, it’s not exactly the most morally sound thing to do."

What the what?? What moral principle could you possibly be referring to? Did you never take an basic econ class in high school?

I'm no scalper, but scalpers are the only reason that PS5 consoles are even available at all, at any price. You have it completely backwards. They are providing an extremely valuable service. The manufacturer doesn't want to charge a higher price now when supply is tight and then lower it later, for lots of product marketing reasons, but until the supply is able to meet the demand at that lower price, the scalpers are the only people providing the consoles at that actual market clearing price. Right now you can get a console for only $200 or so over list, despite the massive demand and limited supply. You can thank a scalper for that.

Scalpers are the only reason PS5 consoles are available at all...?!?!?
Clearly AJV was asleep in that basic Econ class referenced. The source (Sony) releases X number of PS5 Consoles. Scalpers remove a large supply of that product from the market to create artificial scarcity. Now available PS5s = X-(# of scalped supply). Scalpers then take advantage of that artificial scarcity to gouge customers who should have been able to buy it directly from legitimate retail sources charging a fair price if the supply were unaltered. Yes demand would probably still be larger than supply, but under no circumstances did scalpers ever put more supply on the market than originally available so the quote that Scalpers are the only reason PS5 are available at all is not only naive, it is completely ridiculous. Legitimate retailers provide a valuable tool in the supply chain so Sony can concentrate on delivering large quantity shipments, and not have to deal with the business of dealing with many millions of customers directly. They strike deals with legitimate retailers with customer service tools and strong relationships with Sony's target clients. Scalpers add no value to supply chain. They are parasitic to the supply chain, removing product from supply to create artificial supply scarcity and gouge customers who are experiencing artificially induced blockades to their demand. Sony is hurt by the poor image, the retailers are hurt by having to apply resource in less than effective methods of protecting their customers from scalpers, customers are hurt from overpaying for product. There is no benefit, only harm, brought to this ecosystem from Scalpers (parasites). While it is probably technically stretching to call them immoral, they are certainly unethical and need to be addressed by commerce controls.

Come on, you're smarter than that. The scalpers do not take away any of the supply, they resell right away at the market clearing price, where supply matches demand. You even state yourself that at the "fair" price, whatever that means, that demand would be larger than the supply, thus PS5 would still be out of stock but with no option to purchase from a scalper/reseller. As I said, you simply wouldn't be able to get one at any price. As it is now, you can get one easily for about $200 over list.

They absolutely do provide value. They go to the trouble of locating the underpriced stock, waiting in lines, creating bots, whatever it takes, so that PS5s are then readily available to anyone willing to pay the market clearing price without having to go to that trouble. And what's more, they do this despite having scorn and hate heaped on them for their trouble. I say they're heroes.
