What is the difference between the diffinitive collection laserdiscs and the
"faces" laserdisc versions of starwars??

The faces version was released in 97 (I think) and had Darth Vader, Yoda and
A Stormtrooper on the covers of the 3 discs

Thanks for any advice

I believe both the Faces set and the Definitive set were released in
1995. The main difference is the Definitive is in the CAV format, so if
you have a player prone to the infamous CLV color smear, you'd be better
off with the CAV version. CAV equals no color smear.

http://www.blamld.com/ has some of the information you need.

in short : DC 1993
Faces 1995 and a reprint in 1997.

Unfortunately the site doesn't mention
1. that they used the same transfers for the DC and the faces editions
2. that the DC has some problems like missing footage on the first printing,
missing/incorrect subtitles, in the extra's up-side-down picture in
slide-show and -the worst of all- laserrot. Be sure to have some kind
'when-laserrot-I-can-return-set-and-refund-money" option when buying.
3. when buying the faces editions try to find the 1997 pressings made by
Kuraray in Japan. The first 1995 pressing was made by Pioneer USA and this
pressing plant is well known for the white specks, rolling white lines and
drop outs. The Kuraray pressings I have are almost perfect.

Have fun,
Roy

Another option is to go for the Japanese DC 1995 reissue set, shameless plug:

Or I could go for this one at a much more serious price.

Indeed, if you don't mind the sample stickers (can't be removed, i
tried), the lack of obi, and the apparent ring wear on the box. This
one should be priced over $200, we'll see how it goes.

Weren't the "faces" discs originally pressed by Mitsubishi? - Reinhart
