I'm pretty new to the world of audiophile-grade sound components, so I have a few questions about what this thing actually is. I already know that I need a converter and an amplifier to create the sound that goes into my headphones, but is the DAC2 an amplifier? If it is, should I go with that or get a separate amp as well? Also, I've had a sound card in my PC in the past, so would this take the place of it? Any information about this would be greatly appreciated.

It does have a headphone amp in it. If you use the USB connection for your PC it completely bypasses any sound card or mobo audio. The Benchmark is more of a prosound unit than an audiophile one. At that price I think you can get a better sounding combo with a separate DAC and headphone amplifier. Check out the Teac Reference UD-501 and HD-501

Do you mean the HA-501? Because I don't see an HD-501 on that page.
