Rca to hdmi converter box only shows black and white?

My tv only has 1 set of rca hookups and they are pretty much spoken for. So I got a component/rca to hdmi converter box for my satellite box. But when I used it only black and white showed. The picture was better though. Any ideas? I used plain Jane rca cables, and component

Check the menu of the sat box and try any different video output settings you find.
