Recommendations for a laptop?

Hey, so I am looking to get a new laptop which I hope will last me a dozen years. It is for school, software development, work / business, etc. I do not do any gaming at all. I want it to be fast, and the best I can possibly get.


1. What is your budget?

$3000 max. Preferably much closer to $2000.

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?

15" and up. The larger the screen the better.


3. What screen resolution do you want?

1080p HD

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?

I need a portable laptop as functional, fast, etc. as a desktop. I want it to last me 5 - 10 years at least until I can afford to live more in security and purchase a desktop. I will be using this laptop 60 - 80 hours a week for at least the next 4 years.

5. How much battery life do you need?

The more the better!

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?

I do not plan to play any games at all. Perhaps watch a movie every couple of weeks or month but that is it.

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)

Software developpment, applications, downloading a lot of software, a lot of multi-tasking, perhaps some photo editing in the future. Mainly programming and business related though.

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?

1TB HDD +128 SSD.

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.

newegg.ca looks like it is the best, but any place I can pay in CAD and ships to Canada (in Canada to avoid duty fees, etc.).

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?

As long as possible. Atleast 5 - 10 years

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?

DVD burner / player , but I can always buy an external one (and I would appreciate a link to a good external one as well !)

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.

I'd probably go with this MSI GS Series GS60 laptop. It has the best processor, the better quantity of RAM, and you're not wasting money on a gaming graphics card. I also think it's safe to say that if you're using the system 60-80 hours/week, you're going to be plugged in most of that time, so battery life is less of an issue.

A dozen years? 2027?

Looking back a dozen years ago, 2003...a laptop from 2003 would work today, but be very, very slow and limited. No matter how much it cost initially.

Will it still work? Maybe.
Will it still work well? Probably not.
