My Hughes 40 DirectTV Tivo has a menu setting that says "Record to VCR". My
old VCR just died and it seems to be difficult to find replacement VCRs on
sale anymore. So, I thought it might be time to purchase a DVD recorder
instead.

Would it be possible to attach a DVD recorder to the DirectTV Tivo in the
place of a VCR and use it to record movies from my Tivo HD to it as one
would to a VCR? I am assuming of course that there is such a animal as a
stand alone (not part of a PC) DVD recorder. I have not started to look for
it.

Yes. You can connect your standalone DVD Recorder exactly the same way
you would a VCR. There are recorders from Sony, Pioneer, Panasonic,
Toshiba, etc. You have to decide whether you want a recorder with or
without a hard drive. I recommend a hard drive model, but that is my
personal preference.

That is very true Rod, however with a hard drive there is extra storage
space, more flexibility and options. You can only record to DVD without
a hard drive. In addition, a recorder with a hard drive does not cost
that much more.

I think the biggest benefit would be that a hard-drive recorder let's
you do some editing, doesn't it?

You are correct Randy. Hard drive editing depends on the recorder
model, how important it is to you and how much time you are willing to
spend editing the content.
