Unfortunately there isn't a way to track a stolen laptop unless it had tracking software on it, like Lojack. You could try looking at local pawn shops to see if the person who took it sold it locally.

The serial number is only useful if someone has the laptop in their possession so they can view it.

File a police report in case it turns up as stolen property.
Notify the laptop manufacturer in case the laptop passes through a repair or maintenance activity.

Is this true even though on my Dell in the BIOS settings you can choose to have theft protection/tracking enabled incase it gets stolen? This is on a xps m1640 from 2 years ago.
