Replaced my HP hard drive

I replaced the hard drive on my HP pavilion d5 notebook (last time it worked was 2007, I just found it again) I have backup discs but disc 2 out of 3 won't work. I've tried reinstalling vista many times with no success. When it boots up it says "media test failure:check cable". I tried taking my hard drive out of my current HP laptop and putting it into my d5 but I still get a message saying "Boot device not found" "please install an operating system on your hard disk". I don't know where to go from here. Someone please help!
