Restarting acer aspire laptop

I'm trying to restart my acer aspire laptop - have tried the usual, through the start menu, ctrl alt del or simply powering off. Not working, have just been trying to take the battery out but can't seem to do that simply either?? Any suggestions? Thanks

My suggestion, just shut it own the old fashioned way; hold down the power button.
