Hi, I'm looking to get a new phone from Verizon. Has anybody tested
either of these new phones? Any recommendations?

Thanks,
Andrew

Andrew,

There are several pages of reviews for most phones at www.phonescoop.com.
You can compare models and/or brands side by side, also. I keep looking at
CDM-9900 vs. LG VX-8000 phones. I wish I could get a release date on the
VX-8000!

Andrew,

One more thing about the phonescoop reviews. Most of the phones get awesome
reviews for the first week or so, then you start hearing about the bad
stuff. The V710, for example, was highly rated when first released and now
most people flame it.

Take all reviews with a grain of salt.

Hi Andrew - I have had the 8910 for two days so I really can't say much but
my initial impression is good. The only problem I see so far is the phone
becomes very warm. The sound is nice even the speaker phone but I am coming
from Cingular which changed towers in our area and I had no reception or
very poor reception for almost a year.

My husband is going to travel with it this weekend so we will know more
after his trip.

What impressed me the most about Verizon is the customer service rep who
sold us the phones. Everything was explained and every detail of our plan
was printed on the receipt. Cingular was never like that.

Most cell phones get warm during a long call.

I purchased a 9900 last Friday at full retail. There are features I
like and some I don't like but these are personal preferences. You
need to "play" with it before making a decision. My general impression
is that it is a good phone and terrific value for its current
promotional price.

For the same price I chose the 9900 over the 8910. The speakerphone is
much louder. PeopleI spoke to said they had no trouble hearing me and
could not tell I was on a speakerphone.

I have had nokia's for 6 years and never notice them being this warm before.
But I have a leather case on this one. I wonder if that is why.

So far reception with this phone is great. I live in a brick house and
even in the middle of the house it is clear.

I just got my new 9900 yesterday to replace my LG 4400 which is a great
phone. I was waiting for the LG 7000 to drop in price or until my new every
two kicked in so that I could save $100. But then this phone came along at
a great price, and it's trimode (not sure if that's important any more), has
a higher res. display, and a speakerphone to boot. Plus the ~claimed~
battery life is phenomenal. I paid full retail as to not mess up the new
every two so that I could upgrade again at any time rather than having to
wait another 2 years.

Anyway, I have had Audiovox phones in the past (the Toshiba ones), and
thought that they were great, so I had no hesitation in buying this one. So
far so good. Reception is slightly better than the LG 4400 which in my
opinion was above average. Sound quality on both ends is very good too,
again like the 4400. The display is second to none - WOW! describes it
well. I don't really care about the camera, but it works - I took a picture
and made it the background so that was simple enough. The speakerphone is
good enough to check voicemail, *1 for traffic, etc., but in the car
probably won't be a good way to use the phone. Though you could use the
speakerphone while at home. It comes with a bunch of ringers, and while
unimpressive, are better than the ones in the LG 4400. I did figure out
that you can record "voice notes", and make them ringers. So you can record
yourself saying "the phone is ringing", or the radio, or a CD, and assign
the recording as a ringer.

I haven't fully assessed the battery life yet, but it does seem at least as
good as the LG 4400 which was OK for standby time. I find it difficult to
believe that it will actually last 360 hours or whatever it is that they
claim. In a 24 hour period, it went from a full 3 bars down to 1 bar with
about an hour of talking, plus probably an hour at least of screwing around
with the camera, adding numbers to the phonebook, checking out the menus
etc.

There are a couple of features/characteristics of the LG 4400 which I miss.
No "auto volume" which is one of the nicest features. Also, when you hit a
speed dial number, you can't tell who it is you are about to call until you
press the send key. On the LG, if you press "4", the speed dial associated
with 4 appears on the screen so that you can decide whether or not to press
send.

Can you assign individual caller id ring tones on the 9900
(i.e. - when my kids call on my 4400, twinkle, twinkle little star
plays as the ringer)
