I did not see many problems with the outage, unlike those sad people who have become so dependant on BBM that they were acting like they had just lost a loved one

This has nothing to do with the system being closed but everything to do with their choice to route the whole traffic through their servers reating two more points of possible failure: the Blackberry network and the Blackberry enterprise server. You could have an android, Symbian or whatever you consider to be open and make it fit inside that kind of network, it will be more likely to have a failure than a "keep it simple stupid" kind of messaging system like SMS or Exchange Synched mobile devices...
