Ripping Movies/External Hard Drive

I want to rip my DVD's and play them from an external hard drive vs. looking through my DVD's to find the movie I am looking for.

I have a Vizio Smart TV (Model #E43-C2) and a Seagate 4TB External Hard Drive (Model #SRD00F2).

I orginally tried hooking it up through the USB port on my TV and it would not read. I then hooked it up through my DVD player which is a Samsung (Model #DVD-1080P9). The DVD was able to pick ip the external hard drive, but it states it's empty, which it is not.

I did some research on the DVD player and it says that it can only recognize a .mpeg file but I have a .mpg file, an .avi file and an .mp4 file and none are coming up. What am I doing wrong?

This unit can play MPEG4 formats within an avi file.
Types of MPEG4 files are DivX or Xvid. These files have an .avi extension.
AVI files are used to contain the audio and video data. Only AVI format files with the “.avi”
extensions can be played.

how are you ripping/encoding your dvd with?
