I have spent all afternoon trying to add a brand new Samsung 850 EVO to my HP 2000 - it gets recognized in Control Panels devices listing as a "USB Mass Storage Device" in the "unspecified" category. I tried to have Windows 8.1 fix the problem by updating the driver - it says that it has updated the driver but the problem is still not fixed.

Hi,

Will you be using the SSD as a back up drive only or are you going to install an OS with it?

If you'll be using it as your main drive with the OS in it you just need to run your Windows disc with your laptop and making sure to select the SSD where you'll install the OS to. But if you'll be using it as another drive for expansion try to format it first using Computer Management.

Here's a complete tutorial on how to format that drive.
