Hi, We have Samsung smart TV and Phillips HTS. We get sound through the HTS only when playing DVDs and not on normal TV or the sat box. Been trying to make sound work on all inputs but can't get the ext speakers to work on anything but DVD player. We have put the HDMI on the correct ARC point on the TV and DVD player, set the TV to work with external speakers and also tried connecting via an audio cable on the two devices but nothing works. Tried unplugging TV for a couple of minutes to reboot. Normal TV is silent when we switch to external speakers. What are we doing wrong? Could it be our HDMI cable is not the correct type? Or are we expecting too much from the system? Thank you in advance for any suggestions you may have........cheers, Kate

Solution
Can't find the owners manual of the TV online.
You should find the audio settings in the TV menu system. Could be under set up or audio.
Make sure you select the input on the HTS you chose to use (ARC or optical). You don't need both.

Without model numbers I can't give you a detailed answer.
For HDMI ARC to work it needs to be in both the TV and HTS. Then it can be turned on in the TV. Most HDMI cables will be compatible.
Most likely your TV has an optical audio output. If the HTS has optical in then you would use that connection. You may have to turn the optical out on, turn the TV speakers off, and change the audio output type in the TV menu.
There are converters that you can use to match the output of the TV to the HTS.

Hi there americanaudiophile from an english gal in france!

The models nos are as follows:
Samsung smart TV : UE040EH5300WXZF
Philips 3D Blue Ray DVD HTS: HTS3583/12

We have connected the optical cable and the HDMI is in the ARC port in both machines. Turned off the TV speakers but silence on normal TV - only get sound when playing a DVD. However I have no idea how to turn the optical out on or change the audio output type in the TV menu - any ideas would be very much welcome! Cheers, Kate.
