The Sanyo 8100 has died I am told to get the Samsung v1000. Has anyone this
phone?
Does it hold a signal well? Any thoughts?

If you bought it with a Gold MasterCard you get a 2nd year of warranty.

Was it over a year old, and/or the warranty didn't cover it?

How about a Sanyo 8200 ?

I have a VGA1000 (A620) and my wife has an 8100. I think they have
nearly equal RF performance. I like the sound quality better on mine,
she likes the purple color of hers.

I did not like that phone. RF performance seemed quite good coming off
an A500. I'd venture to say that little would seperate the 8100 and
VGA1000, but I don't know who the winner would be.
It was very buggy and unreliable. Get the latest firmware.

My girlfriend has a Sanyo 8100, while I have a Samsung VGA1000 – same
provider – Sprint. After a few months of side-by-side comparisons,
there seems to be NO major differences regarding signal
strength/performance! I prefer the built-in alarm feature with the
Samsung, while she prefers the slightly smaller size and weight of the
Sanyo. These phones are so close in features and performance that
choosing has got to be six of one and a half dozen of the other!

The 8100 is not any older than the VGA1000. I just purchased two new
8100s, great phones.
