Screen goes black with colours can anyone help please

are the cables inserted properly? can you try another connector e.g. hdmi or a vga and see if the problem persists? can you try another monitor?

Sorry I did add more info but must done something wrong
It was initially happening when opening any PDF in full screen
The screen turns mostly black with random colour blocks (small)
It is now happening before Xp finishes loading
It does the same if I use external monitor

Ooh it sounds like your display adapter. I don't know what model your system is still, but whether your computer is running off of a dedicated GPU or the integrated graphics on the CPU, one of those could be failing on you. If your system uses the integrated graphics on the CPU, then the problem might be related to system memory.

It is a clevo laptop with p3 3 ghz desktop CPU
512 m ram
It is probably 8 years old and does need replacing but would like to get into my myob program to finalise some stuff first

It has dedicated graphics then, and it sounds as though that may have failed. Since this happens on an external screen, I'm confident you would need to replace the dedicated video card in the system. 🙁

Some users have seen success with baking the video card. It's a way of reflowing it, though a very homebrew way of doing it. If the card is already bad, then you have nothing to lose should you try it (just be sure to research a guide on how to).
