Screen turns on red and then turns off

Dell atitude D610. Turns on with red screen for a couple of seconds, then the screen blacks out. Replaced the ac adapter and didn't help. Shouldn't it work without the battery in place? I tried removing the battery and it seems to work the same.

It kinda sounds like the screen itself has gone bad.
Or it might be the graphics chip on the motherboard.

I would also throw out that the inverter might be bad. Do you have video when you connect an external monitor? Can you put a flashlight to the screen and see anything?
