Considering your budget, you got a hell lot of options. Your chosen option is also very good. Here's some more:

1. MSI GS60 Ghost Pro - https://www.amazon.com/XOTIC-Skylake-i7-6700HQ-1x512GB-Computer/dp/B015QHZL8M?ie=UTF8&tag=egclaptops-20

Key features: Core i7-6700HQ , 16GB RAM + 500GB SSD + 1TB 2.5" SSD, GTX970M 6GB , 4K screen, light(~4 lbs)
Downside: 15.6"

2. ASUS ROG G752VY-DH72 - https://www.amazon.com/G752VY-DH72-17-Inch-Gaming-Laptop-GeForce/dp/B01578ZM6Q?ie=UTF8&tag=egclaptops-20

Key features: Core i7 6700HQ, 32 GB DDR4-SDRAM, NVIDIA GTX980M 4GB, 1TB+256 NVMe SSD,
Downside: heavy(9.5 lbs)

3. Aorus X7 Pro-Sync - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834725013&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-VigLink2-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3821802&SID=iq6l4esc0p00xwr200053

Key features: Core i7-4870HQ, RAM 16GB(upgradable to 32GB), Dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 970M SLI
Downside: extremely low 128 GB SSD, windows 8.1(according to me)

Both MSI and ASUS are reliable, just depends on the model. If you want some more options, just tell me, I'll post some more links here itself.

Thanks a lot. I also have been looking into a custom built origin laptop, the main reason being that I want a laptop with the 980 desktop version rather than the 980m. Preferrably I'd also like the desktop version of the i7 cpu.

This is the system I setup on Origin, what do you think of the specs?

Those specs are MONSTER. I'll get one like that one day xD. Alternatively, if you want to avoid the hassle of building it yourself, there are 3 others with desktop CPU and GPU(as far as I could find), the Acer Predator 17X, the ASUS ROG GX700 (https://www.amazon.com/GX700VO-VS74K-Full-HD-G-Sync-GeForce-Windows/dp/B01GOQHLU0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1467563099&sr=8-2&keywords=ASUS+ROG+GX700) and the EON17-X from Origin PC. I haven't been able to find a link for the Acer and the EON but the ASUS is outrageously high priced($5000) so you're much better with your chosen one or stick with the previous ones mentioned. There are not many laptops with desktop CPU and GPU.
