This is not my laptop and I am unable to check it out what's going on but I assume it's a hardware problem?

If it isn't your laptop, and you are unable to access/check anything on it yourself, then we really can't help. The person who has access to the laptop would be who needs to be able to do what is suggested and answer questions.
