Sony Blu-Ray Player Skipping on DVD Playback

My Sony Blu-Ray player (BDP-S6500) is skipping on every DVD I try - but here's the weird thing...it plays blu-ray discs just fine. I tried a factory reset. Nope. I made sure it has the latest firmware. Nope.

Anyone ever encountered this?

the Blu-ray and DVD use differing lasers. the Blu-ray laser is much smaller than the DVD laser.
if I had to guess I would go with a failed DVD/RED laser diode.
