I'm in the market for purchasing a new camera, and walked into a Sony store wanting to look at the new 4k tvs and saw

I was really impressed with all the features that were on it and the detail the photos had versus my current Cannon point and shoot. This seems to be kind of a middle ground between a point and shoot and a DSLR camera correct?
Mainly I'm looking for a camera that I will, for the most part, be using to just shoot some photos with friends and at events etc. I enjoy hiking, mountain bike riding and occasionally go camping and I'd like to be able to capture some better photos than I currently can with just a point and shoot. A lot of times I'll be looking at a great view but the photos just don't come out well at all on a point and shoot for things of distance obviously. That said, I don't think I want to invest in a separate DSLR just for that since I'm not sure if I can justify paying for it just for that.
So you see how something that appears to be a middle ground between the two piqued my interest. Are Nikon and Cannon currently have, or are making any cameras similar to this? And do you feel that this camera is worth the price?
I'm curious if anyone has bought one of these and how they like it, or if anyone has any other recommendations for a similar camera in the same price range that they feel is better.
Thank you for any suggestions and help.
