>How does this model rate on quality?

So-so. Better than average for Sony models, but not as good as a decent
Pioneer.

But, since it's based on the MDP-333, it's got some of the same mechanical
quirks.

My advice if you're looking for a LaserDisc player: keep looking and really
only consider Pioneer players. There were only a handful of players that Sony
made that were any good, notably the MDP-605 and the MDP-650.

>What is the bar code reader/remote and rs232 jack for?

LaserBarcode is for educational LaserDisc software. Instead of fumbling with a
remote to access a specific part of a LaserDisc, you merely use a barcode
reader and scan the disc's accompanying book to instantly access the portion of
the disc that the barcode tells the player to go to as well as to set any
options for audio channels.

The RS232 port and DIP switches is to configure the player for use with a
computer. One particular use is for LaserDisc arcade machines.

The RS232 port and LaserBarcode are industry standard features available in
many commercial model LaserDisc players.

RMT-1050 is the model number of the remote for this model. - Reinhart
