If I record at this setting instead of the 4:3 setting, what is happening?
I know that it is not recording with HD resolution, but am I getting more
columns of pixels at the expense of horizontal lines? Is it giving me the
same number of pixels but just widening them to make the screen look wider?
Thanks.

When recording in 4:3 mode the image is 720x480. In widescreen it's
recording 720x320.

So I am actually losing quality just to get the correct "shape" to my
recordings? I do not consider that a good thing. As much as I would like
to watch home recordings on my HDTV with no letter boxing, no thanks.

are you sure that 320 shouldn't be 360? 360 would mean the same quality,
just a shorter picture top to bottom...16:9, at the same absolute width, is
25% shorter than 4:3, right? so the same quality would be 25% less
horizontal lines...right?

On my sony mini-dv camcorder (don't remember the model no), 16x9 mode is
anamorphic so it is still 720x480 but is anamorphically squeezed.

Where do you get this info?

My SONY does anamorphic widescreen, not letterboxing. The drawback is
that when I share my video with friend and family, they thought
everyone of us become tall and skinny.

Basically I think most of them crop the image. You may as well record in
4:3 and crop it later with software. I understand some may do a squeeze,
but many do not. Check your manual, Sony provides them online if you lost
yours.

so then quality should be better, right? more lines in less space?

Pretty much. You will get the benefits of Widescreen obviously
(as in having a wider space for more panoramic type shots) with
a good overall picture quality. Good deal indeed. :)
