Sony vaio memory upgrade now wont start

Hello,
Really struggling now! Have had new HDD put into Sony Vaio. Now trying to get the thing going again, but recovery disc is doing nothing - but then I suppose if there's no operating system on it, there's no driver for the dvd anyway. Oh dear - any help in words of 1 syllable would be MOST appreciated.

Are you able to boot from the recovery disk? Go into your BIOS and ensure that the CD/DVD drive is the primary boot drive. Or you can hit F2 and select which drive you want to boot from.
