Sound from laptop only when connected to tv

I have a new vizio d series 4k tv. When i hook my laptop to it, the sound comes from the laptop but the picture goes to the tv. How can i make the sound come out of the tv

control panel, sound, under playback devices, find the TV, right click, make default device, restart the media player.
