Stereo split to speakers

So, I was considering buying two JBL Xtreme speakers for both TV and music. Music is fine, but TV is another thing.

Could I use a little AUX splitter which splits left and right ear sounds from stereo, use two aux cables from that to both speakers and make them play as if the audio is stereo?
Feel free to ask questions if I was unclear.

Have you considered simply buying a receiver and speakers? From my research the JBL Xtreme speakers sell for $300 each - you could spend much less on a solid speaker setup. To answer your questions, I believe it would work. The sound level would be lower and you would take a hit to the quality of sound, but it would work.
