we all know that they just want to try to keep people from accessing content anyway other than through itunes or the apple store.

Isn't there something wrong there? Isn't that anti-trust.. .or something? They're keeping people from accessing other people's content on their device.

You have to buy their stuff or jail break your phone and void your warranty...

I wonder if adobe has actually created a flash extension for the iphone OS. I mean, apple has long been a closed company, but usually after enough pressure they come around, this time they didn't.

It makes me wonder if adobe had made a flash extension, showed it to apple, and it just wasn't up to par.

Apple doesn't want flash because allowing flash will take a significant amount of business away from the app store. Why pay anything for an app when there is a flash based website that has the same functionality as the app?

soooo Flash is a closed system? Interesting point Mr. Jobs. Don't quite understand how Flash can be a closed system when it is on a majority of websites. Meanwhile over at camp apple; Jobs appears to not want Flash because it will open HIS closed system Allowing developers to have more freedom.

Allowing for Flash will only broaden Apple's products because developers will have access to creating Flash based apps (doesn't mean they have to use Flash).

The news shouldn't be surprising--the fact that Jobs prefers not to allow Flash doesn't mean he feels no respect for the company and its accomplishments.

Is it me, or does the author of this article have some extreme bias for Steve Jobs / Apple? Sounds like an apologetic's defense letter for his client, not a tech article.

While how many websites Flash (or anything else) is used on has no bearing on whether or not it is "closed".

Though, I have to agree that this article does a good job portraying just how "closed" and controlling Jobs and Apple are when it comes to it's developers.

"he doesn't want a 3rd party, closed system interfering with the relationship between the developer and Apple's closed system"

Developers should be able to use any tools, they so choose, to develop applications as long as said applications fit the architecture and have the ability to run on the system at the end of the day.

Adding superficial requirements to developers can only stifle creativity and productivity.

if Flash was truly a closed software; do you think so many ppl would create websites using it?

The bias was made pretty clear when the author felt the need to explain Jobs point before even quoting him. I always appreciate an article that assumes I'm an imbecile unable to develop my on conclusions based on what someone has said.

But news flash to the author, Job's points don't make sense. Hes criticizing Adobe for being a closed platform when apple's foundation is based off of being a closed platform. Apple is proprietary everything.

Do you know what closed means? Flash is most definitely a "closed platform" you cannot edit the source code to change it's functionality.

The point here is that developers should be able to use anything they want (Flash included).

It's what you get when two closed source, greedy companies want a share of the same pie.

Adobe wants to impose its own rigid proprietary standards on an equally rigid closed source system and that's bound to go wrong.

Seriously, Parrish? This is your article? You know that Steve can say whatever he wants, it's his ACTIONS that count.
His reasons are rather to the point, and really does make sense

A: Grammar? No big, but still. . .

B: They DON'T make sense. If Adobe makes an environment to build apps then why not let US figure out if we want those apps and let the developers figure out if they want to use that environment?

Please, think about it. I don't LIKE Flash (hate it) but it's cross-platform so you can make it for all - and THAT is what Steve hates. He wants lock-in.

Still, if YouTube can create an app for that, then why can't these other multimedia giants follow suit?

Really? That's going to be your attitude?

Apple has you big time, Kevin. Sad.

"Steve Jobs: I Respect and Admire Adobe"

Why?? I don't. They make crappy software and never patch it, then force everyone to deal with it. I hate Adobe.

Then again, I hate Apple software too. Quicktime demands it is to take over all media file playback on install, even though it doesn't have half the features of Media Player, then it screws up we browser settings all over the place. iTunes is just as crappy.

Now, MS, they have some decent software. There is a reason they are the leading software company. They do things far better than any other software company I've dealt with. They aren't perfect, no, but they are better than the rest. At least they patch stuff.

I'm actually kind of surprised Steve P. Jobs hasn't pulled out his ultimate weapon:

"You know how many porn websites streams videos through Flash?"

"Flash supports porn. Adobe supports porn."

"Do you want your kids to download porn?"
