I want to rip all my DVD's and Blu Rays on to a single external hard drive. I want to be able to then stream those videos to my smart TV and PS3 over wired connections through my router.
Is there a box
(external hard drive) I can buy to accomplish this?
Are you asking if there's a specific external drive you should buy? If so, the answer is no. Any external drive, with sufficient capacity, will do.
I'm wondering if I need an external hard drive with any special programs, etc. Will any external hard drive with an ethernet port (to plug into my router) then sync up with my PS3 and smart tv and stream video from the drive?
You don't need any special programs. The PS3 and your SmartTV are DLNA compatible. DLNA is the best way to stream over a network. Once your media is placed on the external drive you'll need to share the device/media folders so your PS3 and TV can see them.

So the external drive needs to be plugged into the modem / router ? and not the main pc that I have the external plugged into now ? My external has NO ethernet port just a USB port will that work as well, and will I have to log into the router from my other devices to view media ?
