Student-sized budget DSLR

Hi everyone! I am looking to get into photography as a hobby. I'm getting tired of my less than average phone camera and want to move into something better. I'm a student so my budget is extremely tight. I'm looking to spend $200 for just the body or a bit more if it includes a lens. I have been looking at used cameras since $200 is quite literally nothing for a brand new camera. I would love if I could get some advise on what models would be good to look for, and also what to watch out for when buying a used camera?

Looks like the Canon Rebel T1i is around that price range used. Friend has one and takes pretty good pictures.

I've had two Rebels - a T3i and just picked up a T6. Very, very easy to use and take great pictures.

I have been looking through b&h and eBay and I found a nikon d5100 and a Canon rebel t1i. Which one do you think is a better option? And what would be a good lense to start with for each one?

Personally I would go with the Nikon D5100. It is a newer camera than the T1i. The T1i was released in 2009 and the Nikon D5100 was released in 2011.

The 18-55mm lens is usually the kit lens sold with both of those cameras. It is a general purpose lens. The lens you should choose depends on what you will be shooting.
