Downloading free apps that use advertising as a revenue model can create a significant risk of malware download to a user, a study covering 100,000 Google Play apps published by North Carolina State University claims.
I'm glad these researchers actually came up with a solution that doesn't hurt any party so much as make it slightly inconvenient for developers when developing their apps. Kudos to the NCSU researchers.
