If you watch TV, you're a fat couch potato.
If you read books, you're a know-it-all book worm.
If you surf the internet, you have no life.
If you play sports, you're a stupid jock.

...what exactly are we supposed to do in our spare time?

Well it used to be television and now it's the net,of course young people would be fascinated by such an interactive medium ,methinks that it would be better if young people were restricted to no more than a couple of hours per day because as a developing young thing there are cognitive and physical traits that have to be developed which absolutely require interaction with other living beings to say nothing of the needful development of their physical persons that they will need later in life,,in fact if a growing body is not regularly pushed to it's limits from time to time it will have an impact on their overall development and longevity as well as the quality of their life in their old age..:)

I find it funny everything is considered a health problem; I guess that keeps people who work in the medical field and drug companies in business…. I think half of the health issues that these doctors and drug companies create are phony and just another cash crop. Don’t get me wrong there are those who have
addiction to just about anything or use to much of something nobody is prefect. i am sure their is a drug, i lov the depression commercials on tv some guy looking out a window...omg take our drug...really i understand some people are sick, do crazy things like cut themselves and such please med them, but a guy who looks glum after a bad day doesn't require a drug to fix his problem.

This is exactly the point. The governments of the world see us as only commodities. We are nothing more then production and they (and the Central Banks) want us to do nothing more then to link ourselves body and mind to the economies of the world.

What is the differance between sitting at you computer at home at night, and going out to the local hang outs? Answer : When you go out you spend money and are being a consumer that is feeding the machine.

However I have found in my studies that people who spend a lot of time on the internet tend to be more well informed on current events and even more, world events.

By the way it didnt seem to be such a bad thing in the 1970's when my father came home and spent the night tinkering away on his cars in the garage. Sure when i was a teen we didnt have the internet. So instead we drank a lot of beer and broke things. How is that any better?

Even if you are sitting at home on your pc cruising the internet whether it be porn or CNN you are and will always be a consumer, thus contributing to the economy.

Weird... We already have gun stores...

But... Social phobia and depression? Those could LEAD someone to the Internet in the first place. And why are people hung on sociality? How is that a PROBLEM? The majority of people are idiots, and those that choose not to associate themselves with such now have mental issues? Great...

Internet users are consuming I count 12 adds on this page alone, all of which are paying this site, and whose parent company have some uber complex formula showing how all that makes them money.

So called "internet addicts" are excellent multitaskers not ADHD. Being ADHD is the exact opposite of sitting in a computer chair for hours on end. Depressed "addicts" were more then likely depressed before using the web to treat the depression.

Lastly according to Consensus Document: The American Academy of Pain Medicine, The American Pain Society, The American Society of Addiction Medicine, 2001: "In medical terminology, an addiction is a chronic neurobiologic disorder that has genetic, psychosocial, and environmental dimensions and is characterized by one of the following: the continued use of a substance despite its detrimental effects". By definition the internet can only be addictive if it is detrimental to the user. A person cannot overdose on the internet, it is not a substance to be abused. Yes if you sit at your desk for days without moving you can die, but the same can be said of TV, driving, or playing an instrument that requires sitting.

The truth is by making the web dangerous or a "public heath issue" our government moves just that much closer to justifiably regulating the web. They did it with narcotics (although they are used by every major drug manufacturer see what money buys) alcohol, tobacco, trans-fatsand thousands of other items. The internet represents a challenge to congress, they can't touch it because of the 1st and 10th amendments. But if the internet were deemed a public health issue well the greater good comes before constitutional rights, see above list if you don't believe me.
