Suggestions for speakers for computer

I currently have a logitech x-540 theatre system hooked up to my computer. This system is quite a few years old and honestly i've never really been happy with the sound output. I'm looking for something that I can hear pretty much across the house. I was wondering if you could provide me some suggestions or place to look online to start doing research. I'd say my budget would be up to $500.00. I'd also like something that would be good for movies since I have a blu-ray player on my new pc and I do a lot of gaming so something that would also be good for that as well would be great.

Also right now i'm on the integrated ports for my Asus-Z87-A mobo. I'm assuming i'll also need a decent sound card?

the Logitech 5500s are great ... have 3 sets of them ....bought em all over the years whenever Dell runs its $300 specials

newegg has listed for $395 but outta stock...other retailers sell for ridiculous prices
