all i want is a laptop that is good enough for surfing the net and general work like with office. i want to study next year so obviously i dont need one that is good for playing games. for this i have already a very good desktop rig.

i live currently in hong kong but will move to australia in a few months and so far i have looked in several shops but these laptops cost more than my gaming rig. the laptops that were cheap were having an i3 intel chip. but mostly brands i have never heard of or were told they arent good like lenevo.
samsung im skeptical as well since my wife had a samsung and it broke on her after a year.

so what brand is good and does not cost a fortune for my simple needs?

thanks

What is your budget ? Usually every brand has a few good pieces.
Hp is pricey but have some nice series, also their support is good.
Toshiba have good mid-range laptops and good support.
Lenovo are pricey and I'm not sure how good their support is, most of their laptops are mid-high end.
Sony VAIO is definately NO! NO NO AND NO!
Samsung laptop sounds like Sony car, aka same as Sony VAIO.
Cannot comment on Asus and others, since i have no experience with them.
So say your budget and what do you want, like i5, SSD, ram, OS.
Where are you going to buy the laptop from ?
Have in mind that warranty is important, by support i mean exactly that.
If it fails, to be able to send it under warranty and returned in under 30days, repaired and/or changed.

since i live in hong kong, i want to get it from there. they are cheaper than in australia. the laptops i have seen in shops were all between 6000-8000 HKD. thats more then what i have payed for my custom gamer rig. asus on the other hand was really expensive. they charge over 12000-16000 HKD.

i was looking for something below 4000 HKD. maybe 5000. like i said: i just need a laptop that can run office and for surfing the net. i do have a tab from acer but that thing is unreliable and is slow too. only 2gb ram.
so if the laptop has an i5 chip, thats fine, as long that things works as it should and doesnt cost me a fortune. i really cant say what it should have. just want a good brand that works for a long time.

Can you point any shop in Hong Kong that i can use as reference ?
Still those are some best shots, for your money:
http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Satellite-Business-Customized-Upgraded/dp/B016U2USVM/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1450451916&sr=1-2&refinements=p_n_size_browse-bin%3A2423841011%2Cp_n_feature_eighteen_browse-bin%3A6819965011%2Cp_n_feature_four_browse-bin%3A2289793011%2Cp_n_feature_five_browse-bin%3A7817224011%2Cp_n_operating_system_browse-bin%3A5945862011
Full HD resolution, 8gb ram, enough space, plenty of USB ports good Processor, DVD drive, VGA + HDMI output.

http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-15-6-Inch-Touchscreen-i3543-5751BLK/dp/B00RH69XLW/ref=sr_1_4?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1450451916&sr=1-4&refinements=p_n_size_browse-bin%3A2423841011%2Cp_n_feature_eighteen_browse-bin%3A6819965011%2Cp_n_feature_four_browse-bin%3A2289793011%2Cp_n_feature_five_browse-bin%3A7817224011%2Cp_n_operating_system_browse-bin%3A5945862011
Touchscreen, Good processor, enough ram again, low resolution 1366x768, nice amount of usb ports, no VGA output.

Once again Touchscreen, but this time Full HD, be careful when choosing touchscreen *Flex* laptop, some of them have a lot of problems.
If you go for a Yoga style laptop or one like this lenovo, be sure to check online for touchscreen problems. Sometimes from changing their position from laptop to *tablet* style, their cables break. And some series have native Touchscreen going off pretty often, where OEM blames Microsoft and vice versa ( means Microsoft says go to OEM ...).

http://www.amazon.com/HP-Pavilion-17-3-inch-i5-5200u-Processor/dp/B016LGZ6BO/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1450452658&sr=1-3&keywords=hp+i5
17,3 Inches laptop, 6gb ram, still enough for office work. Good processor overall, nice amount of USB ports. Again no VGA output and the resolution is fine 1600x900.

Those are some that i can recommend.
Any of those laptops, should be checked if you can insert SSD. If you don't need DVD you have an option to insert SSD instead of DVD drive and/or some of them have Msata slots.
Any of those laptops will perform OK for browsing word and so on. None of them have MSOffice included. And an SSD is welcome for any of those laptops, with an SSD (at least 120gb preferred) they will be more than satisfying.

the toshiba and HP look nice. even the screen size is good. over 17" is good for me. still like to see things. dont want too small. my tab has a resolution of 1366x768 and i like to have it bigger.
i see now i also forgot to mention that i dont really want touch screen. and i have office. so good point for mentioning about having a dvd drive. having USB ports is something i didnt think about either.

a shop i most likely wold get it from would be in Wan Chai. there is a store that sells a lot of electronic stuff. thats were i have checked out a lot of laptops. other shops like fortress have a smaller selection and arent cheap.
