Surround sound on Netflix vs Amazon

I am not an audio tech genius. I have a question maybe somebody more knowledgeable could answer. In have a surround sound system for my tv. Works great with DVD's. Most of my brb comes from netflix. It doesn't work for them. However some of the shows I watch on Amazon are great through the surround system. Any explanations would be helpful.

Are you using the built-in player on the TV or are you using an external player (Roku, firestick, etc)? Could the ones that don't work well be old enough that they didn't have surround sound? Old TV shows for example won't have surround sound.
