Surround sound quiet speech

I'm trying to hook up surround sound to my TV, however I can't figure out how to get full sound

I'm using logitech x540's. On the back of the subwoofer there are black, orange and green jacks (for rear, sub/center and front speakers). However, i've only been able to get it to work by plugging the subwoofer into the tv's headphone jack via the 'front' socket on the subwoofer. From what I can tell it just splits the sound into all 5 speakers, and doesnt give true surround sound (speech is very quiet)

The back of the TV has hdmi sockets, headphone, optical, red/white left and right, Pr Pb Y, and I cant figure out how to connect the black/orange/green wires , or even how to connect it to the xbox 360

TVs do not have surround processors built in and so don't output discrete outputs the way a sound card does. The headphone out is stereo and the optical out may be able to output in surround but only into a surround sound receiver which then extracts the channels.

So maybe if I used an adapter that goes from the 3.5mm stereo jacks in the subwoofer (rear front and centre) to optical then it could give full surround sound? If there is such a thing

But instead of only one 3.5mm input there's 3 to plug into the sub then the optical into the back of the tv?
