not sure if this is the best ng for this question. i've seen several
versions of various '10-in-1' tv game units with classic atari games,
etc. i'm wondering if anything similar exists with Tempest (1981)? i
don't want it to be for playstation, etc. just some sort of stand
alone, hand held game with paddle.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, none of the current crop of plug 'n play TV games features
Tempest. I doubt you'll ever see one due to the spinner controls. The
paddle game controls don't rotate 360 degrees like the Tempest spinner does.
The only other game I can think of that would use the same control might be
Indy 500 for the Atari 2600, and I can't see a "TV Games featuring Indy 500
and Tempest" attracting much mainstream attention.

Your cheapest Tempest fix is to pick up a PS One ($50) and a copy of Tempest
X or Atari's Greatest Hits ($19). Or maybe a Jaguar with Tempest 2000 on
eBay--those are almost like a plug 'n play TV game...

Well, there's Major Havoc, I guess. But I bet these vector games
wouldn't look so great on a regular TV set. Maybe if there was a
chipset that output HD video it would be pretty nice, but regular NTSC
composite would look really bad. Especially since Tempest was a
vertical game, and it would need to be squashed vertically.

Not that they would even try to use the original code. Many of these
game units are really Famiclones running dodgy clones of the original
games.

Of course none of those have the "paddle" encoder wheel used in the
original, but at least the Jaguar version will allow you to hack your
own (using an Atari 2600 driving controller). If you haven't played
Tempest 2000 on the Jag, it is truly a must-have for classic gamers.

And IIRC, Tempest 2000 was also available on the Sega Saturn.
