Modern refrigerators are very energy efficient. While I wouldn't place the main fridge in the garage, we've bought them in the $500 range for the garage and monitored their usage. Our last one was 8 years old when we sold the house and cost about $30 a year to run. Well worth it to store extra drinks and gallons of water. We also used it to store food for larger gatherings before and after the event. My wife loved being able to store platters in the fridge before events, as well as frozen turkeys so they didn't take to space in the main fridge. An odd usage we really liked was to store food waste we weren't going to compost in the freezer until trash day so it didn't get all stinky.

So get your garage fridge if you want one, it will be just fine.
