I would carefully glue a small piece of a similarly porous paper or lightweight cloth over the tear and let it completely dry before using.

Are you talking about the ring of foam around the cone? If it ripped with hardly any pressure on it, I would guess that maybe there is foam rot, in which case you would probably want to re-foam the speaker. It wouldn't harm your speaker if you tried what RealBeast suggested
