Which is the best and why? I'm planning on two units eventually (1 in
bedroom and 1 in living room). I would also love to network them together.
Not sure whether I'm getting satellite or cable for my new home yet. I will
compare the offers and see what is the better bargain.

Personally I love the commercial advance feature, but I believe it has
been reported that it is not active in the current Replay models and as I
understand it TIVO never had it.

Next in my book will be HD TV capable machines.

It's be good if Replay made a HDTV capable DVR. And not one of those
"integrated" ones, but one that'll accept any HD source.

Tivo has a manual 30 second skip, which by default is disabled, and is
enabled by a backdoor code.

If you are getting satellite, you can consider getting DirecTV, where
you can get dual tuner combo boxes, however at this time the feature
to link them together to share recordings is not offered.

If networking is one of your goals then Replay is how to go.

Tivo can offer it but add an add-on cost. Replay offers it out of the
box. . To that i added a free piece of software(DVArchive) and i can
insert my PC into the equation as well, using it to download programs
and burning DVDs.

Functionalities, otherwise are similar. The great thing is that
Replay is still selling their 50XX models on their site which have
internet sharing and Commercial Advance (discontinued in new models).
The were $139 each with a 40 GB disk. Since I have 280GB disks on my
PC, if I get close to filling them, i just copy a program over to te

Not a bad feature and it sure beats FF, but not near as nice as
commercial skip.

Since I am not using satellite, I doubt it that would be my answer.

Re: The $139 price. Go to Amazon.com, search for ReplayTV and click the
link. It will take you to a page that sells the 5040 for $119 + free
shipping!

That gets you the hardware. Remember that to use it, you have to pay
the activation fee too, so the price is more like $420. Not bad for a
Replay (note that the first models sold for at least $700), but still
not $119.

What software do you use for burning? I'm getting a burner soon, and
I'm still not sure which program is best. I've been reading some
interesting things about 123 Copy DVD, though. Apparently it's
actually DMCA compliant, but can copy any DVD. DVD X Copy Platinum is
pretty popular, but it's far more pricey, around $100 vs $20, and the
company is getting its pants sued off at the moment.
