Tor, can it get fast?

Tor is not fast. My question is, if fx 80 percent of all private computer users
would run tor relays, would tor then be fast? Or is being slow part of the tor application? Thanks.

Tor is slow because the network is so small, and the computers and network connections people are running it on is limited. Moreover, you are connecting to random places in the world which can add lengthy paths through the network to your exit node.

Tor is an interesting idea, but not very practical for general computer use. It's like taking the internet and undoing all the good things about it.
