Toshiba laptop monitor blanks out when i plug my ipod in

Everytime I plug my iPod into my Toshiba laptop , it freezes and the screen goes black but the actual computer is still on and my iPod continues to charge .. Is the screen blacking because it's too old ? Why is this happening ?
