Trouble hooking up soundbar

I have an older (2007) Hitachi 50" plasma tv. Model P50H401. The sound is going out so I purchased a cheap soundbar. I have optical outputs and try using that, but it will not work. The instructions say to make sure to set the TV audio setting to PCM or Optical Audio. However, when I try this the TV says this feature is not available. Is there any way to upgrade this so it will work?

If there is no way to change the TV output to PCM then you should get a soundbar that will accept a 5.1 channel input. If you use a set top box you could connect the soundbar to that and set it to 2.0 PCM output.
