Trying to connect external monitor to new laptop but the monitor stays black

Hi,

So I bought a new laptop recently and I'm trying to connect it to a samsung monitor. I thought it would be easy to do since I have set up dual monitors multiple times in the past and am using one right now with my desktop. I did all the standard things such as plugging the HDMI cable in (laptop has 1 HDMI port and 2 mini display ports), then going into screen resolution and detecting the displays. I also pressed the the fn + f7 key and selected extend displays but the external monitor remains blank. In screen resolution it shows that it has found the monitor but the screen just remains black.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure you have selected the right source from Samsung Monitor?

Yeah, when it's on the right source it says "check signal cable" on the screen. However the cable does work with with my tv so I don't think the cable is broken.
