Tried to hook up basic cable to my 2014 rca flat screen with just cable cord from wall to TV went to setups and searched for channels didn't work

+1 ^, many cable services are now digital and scrambled for all channels, you would need a cable box to use.

Make sure the tuner or source is set for cable and not antenna

Your TV may not have QUAM digital cable tuner built in or your cable provider may not have any clear channels that can be seen without a box or adapter.
