Trying to run audio from my computer

So i'm trying to run audio from my computer to a new tv i just got

It's a Sceptre E505BV-FMQR

Anyway i came from an old Samsung plasma that i got back in 09 (the hdmi ports were hit by lighting so its useless now), and all i had to do for it was run an 3.5mm M/M audio cord from the output on my computer to the input on it and it worked fine

but when i tried to plug it into this new one i get no sound at all, and it even turned off the sound from my direct tv box.

I'm connecting video through a dvi-hdmi cord (i dont have a graphics card with hdmi atm)

possibly The TV is expecting sound through the HDMI?

Look in your TV manual to see if it allows you to configure it to use a different audio source when using HDMI.

Are you sure the 3.5mm jack on the TV is an input and not an output?

You may need to get a converter to turn the 3.5mm into a RCA connector.

Also possible that a bargain basement Sceptere TV just wont support video from hdmi AND audio from somewhere else

if i can't get it working like this whats the next best way to output audio from my computer to the tv?

On page 12 - you are supposed to plug your PC' audio output into #3 - "Audio In", which gets activated with video input #4 - "PC"

Yeah i did that, but i don't get sound.

You did switch your TV to "Input PC", didn't you?
What happens if you connect a media player / smartphone instead of PC?

I'm assuming you mean the vga port, and no i didn't because i'm not using that, i'm using an hdmi port.

that thing gets terrible reviews

and spending $40-50 to do this seems like a bit much.

Your TV expects the sound to come thru HDMI. Your only option is to use VGA input with ordinary 3.5mm audio.
