Whether you’re staying in a hotel and don’t want to pay extra for Internet, or simply need to provide a few different people with web access on the go, knowing how to create a wireless hotspot by using your mobile device is a handy trick to have up your sleeve. The steps below will show you how to do it with an Android tablet.
Step 1
If you have access to a power source, be it an electrical outlet or a cigarette lighter plug in the car, hook your tablet up to it. Creating a Wi-Fi hotspot uses a lot of battery, and you don’t want your tablet dying on you when you need it most.
Step 2
All Android tablets are slightly different, and some may have a pre-installed app for creating a hotspot. If you don’t see one in the app folder, though, head to the “Settings” menu instead.
Step 3
Look for the “Wireless & Mobile Hotspot” section of the Settings menu. Once you’ve found it, tap “More” to get a wider array of options. You should see a checklist of items show up, with either “Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot” or “Mobile Hotspot” among them. Check whichever hotspot option you see.
Your hotspot is now active! Of course, you will probably want to do some additional customization to your makeshift network, from giving it a name so that you can find it easily under your laptop’s Wi-Fi networks menu to password-protecting it so that strangers can’t use it. Luckily, all of this is possible right from the same menu where you just activated your hotspot.
