I have an old hp ProBook laptop. Windows vista basic. I have a hdmi cable and a HDMI to VGA converter that connects it to my new television. The laptop makes a sound and the picture narrows which I am assuming means that it registers the TV but the TV does not recognise the laptop no matter which hdmi connection I use, how long I wait or which HDMI selection I make from the TV.
TV does not register lold laptop.

HDMI is digital video and audio. VGA is analog video. You can't use a cable to convert.
You need an active VGA + audio to HDMI converter something like this one.
