TV speakers and Surround sound

When my surround sound goes out with a power hit, I can't seem to switch to the TV speakers and get sound. Why is that?

Because your device had a power surge which can damage things. Since this is happening often it looks like, you should get a UPS for it so it does not break eventually.

It doesn't happen often and I do have everything plugged into a surge protector, I still should be able to get sound out of my TV speakers. I should be able to switch back and forth, correct? Do I have to unplug something from my TV (the surround sound) when I want to go back to TV speakers?

You should not have to unplug them, but you wold need to set the speaker option in the TV to the internal ones. Depends on your TV model though, maybe it disables the built in speakers when you use external ones.
