1. What is your budget? $1100

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering? 15 in. preferred, will consider smaller.

3. What screen resolution do you want? 1080p if possible

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop? portable

5. How much battery life do you need? 5+hrs in one sitting

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)? No. I intend for it to be a workstation-ish.

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.) Web browsing, reading technical papers, programming.(and will be playing with opengl)

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need? currently got 500 gb with current machine with > 250 gb free. no preference for SSD or HDD.

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links. preferably sites with no tax + free ship. x]

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop? for the next 3-4 years. or less depending on market.

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ? not required.

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons. Anything but apple. Or any brand the recommender does not feel highly of. I'm currently looking the vizio ct15-a2 but its a little over budget.

Emphasis on portability. My univ is big and the CS and Engineering buildings are on opposite ends of the campus :(
I don't know if having discrete graphics will be beneficial. Anyone experienced working with opengl on newer intel hd graphics?

I would go with the Asus Zenbook, you may have to wait a bit for a quick enough CPU - probably the 1.7 Ghz i7 at least. I do not think discrete graphics would be much of an issue if you aren't planning to game.
I am in the same boat except I want to be able to play a few games.
