A bout 5-4 years ago we got my father a surround sound system. It hooked up into a receiver that was also a dvd player. My parents just got a new 60 inch 1080p 120Hz HDTV. I want to convince them to upgrade to Blu Ray.

So.....the thing is that my father doesn't want a new surround sound system, he is happy with the speakers and sub woofer. I do not know much about home theater equipment but it the system uses these cable that look like telephone jacks.

Any way. When I am shopping for a new Bu Ray player what do I need to look for, so that I can use it with my parents old system. I am trying to replace the DVD receiver with a blu ray one.

Solution
if ur soundsystem is good, and ur DVD player-or rather if u are going to get a good blu ray palyer, stick with analogue.
stick with analogue if ur source player(dvd/bluray) is better then the AV receiver.

stick with digital if ur AV receiver is more high end then ur source player, but try to avoid SPDIF, but i doubt ur surround sound system has HDMI audio input.

First, is what brand and model does dvd/receiver and the TV? Because this is the determining factor on what kind of unit, you are going to need. In most cases though, any dvd player would do, especially if your dad sound system have digital audio input and tv has digital audio output.
